Marlin 795 problem

I have recently bought a Marlin 795 and I have put around 100 to 200 rounds through it. When I shoot it the gun is fine and everything but about every 15 or 20 rounds or so it will not cycle a round into the chamber and it will result in a "dry fire". Then i have to pull the bolt back to cycle another round into the chamber. It seems like it always does it on the second or third round in the magazine. Could it be my ammo or magazines or something else? I am currently using the cheap Federal bulk ammo. What do you guys think?

Try a different manfacturer's ammo. If you get 50 out of 50, then you know why I stay away from Federal.

The 795 is a little ammo picky at first. I had the same problem with the cheap Federal Bulk pack ammo. After 500 or so rounds it loosened up to were it is a great shooter. I know it is a pain but the more you shoot it the better it becomes. It was like that for the other two Marlins that I had also.

Funny you should say that. We put a Ruger MKIII on a Ramsom Rest and the cheap Federal shot the tightest group of all the ammo we tried even better the the Ealy Match Grade.

you have to use high powered rounds. it says in the manuel that it has to take only high powered rounds or it will not cycle. no other ammo besides high power will cycle it. hyper velocity is too much for the gun. its meant for hp rounds only.

My PPK/s .22 does not like Federal at all. It will work with most other ammo.

Each firearm has its own preferences. What works for mine may not be the best for you.

And I am not aware of any rule of thumb that can be used to find out what works for you. Only trial and error.

I would try some different ammo and see what happens. If that doesn't work then pick up another magazine, mark them so you know which is which and see if that fixes the problem.
I'm curious to see what the solution will be because my 795 eats anything I put thru it.

Mine is out of the box new and just shot approx 150 round through it using Federal bulk ammo without any problems. I was actually expecting it to have a few hiccups since I did not even bother cleaning it (last minute addition firearm for the range visit) but it just shot flawlessly.
