Magnum Research Magnumlite 17 hmr Ruger 10/22 mag

Hello all. I'm looking at the Magnum Research 17 hmr based on the Ruger 10-22 mag. I love my bolt action 17 hmr, but would really like an autoloader. Anyone have any feedback on this rifle?

Stay Away from Magnum Research

Funny you should ask about that gun. I purchased one about a month ago. I thought they would be a great gun to have for coyote hunting. When I was sighting the gun in I noticed it was having a chambering issue as the shell casings were bulging on the bottom of the round when they were ejected. I ask Scheels about the issue they told me Magnum Research recalled a bunch of these guns for that issue. They ran my serial number and told me my gun was okay and not in the recall. I change ammo as I thought that might help. That did not help so Scheels swapped me for new gun. The new gun was a later version and Scheels was told the issue was corrected. I only shot the new gun eight times then I inspected the rounds. Two of the eight rounds were bulged. Needless to say I no longer have the gun. Scheels has pulled all of the those guns off the shelf.

Magnum Reserach 17 HMR

I purchased a Magnum Research 17HMR about four months ago from Scheels. About a month ago I had it recalled and the person did not know exactly why.
I have not yet recieved it back yet.

I can tell you that it does really well at 100 to 150 yards, really tight groups.

When my son used it to shoot prairie dogs this last fall, he said it had a round blow up into his face with no injury to him just powder. I think this may be why it was recalled. But don't really know as of yet why.
If you shoot it more than 100 times you better have a gun cleaning kit with you because it will miss fire alot.

I think if I get a chance to return it, I would trade it in for a lever action.

Keep on top of them with calls AND letters.

The .17 semi-auto is having the same basic problem as the .22WMR semi-auto's have had for decades...it's a rifle round that has basic physics issues with working in a semi-auto configuration. It's why Ruger has brought out & dropped multiple times the 10/22-Magnum.

What Magnum Research needs to do is buy a few Grendel P-30/P-31/R-31's and try to figure out what Grendel did RIGHT and use that info to make their guns work properly.

I personally believe in the bolt action for that caliber....

I know people have been having a lot of trouble with the .17 HMR auto-loaders. There's actually a disclaimer on all the ammo that I've gotten for my .17 HMR saying not to shoot it in auto-loaders.

All I can say is that those things are frickin LIGHT! I think the trigger on my 700 weights more than a whole MagRes.

Group,
I too had alot of trouble doing this conversion. Finally solved it with a
Shilen 20 inch std taper barrel, Volquartsen sharp edge extractor, and Volquartsen trigger group. I did have to send the barrel and action out to Shilen to work on it. My original Shilen barrel purchased from Midway had the bulged cases etc that is common for this conversion. I do not know what Shilen did to fix this issue, but the barrel and action they sent back works perfectly. I am thinking it was a chamber size issue but I really don't know. All I know is that since they worked on it, I have not had a single malfunchtion in perhapsa 5 or 6 hundred rounds. Anhyhow, I just wanted to report that this conversion can be done, and you need to spend some bucks to get it done. I would say the folks at Shilen know what they are doing and woudl start with them. I couldn't say more good things about them!!!
