j Stevens.model 87a

I have a j Stevens model 87a ..the thing bout it is it shoots both semi(22 shorts) and full auto (22lr only) has any one eles have one or ever shot one?

Not that uncommon for that model after they get wore some. When I was a kid we had one that would shoot fine with long rifles but would often shoot 3 or 4 shorts at a time(and then sometimes jam). Thru the years I have seen and heard this often on this model. I think parts are still available to fix these.

Morning, Chaos- welcome to the forum. When you get a minute stop by the intro thread and tell us about yourself.

Slang term for your rifle was the "Gill Gun" due to the vent slits at the chamber. There are a lot of them out there somewhere- they were made from about 1938-1968. You may find the same rifle bearing the name Savage, Springfield, Stevens, or Fox- Savage bought Stevens in about 1920, and there is a somewhat incestuous relation between the companies. You will also find them with the name J C Higgins (Sears) Westernfield (Montgomery Wards) and Revelation (Western Auto)- all made by Savage/Stevens/ Springfield but branded with the store brand.

Fun little rifles, unusual fire control system.

Chaos- I doubt that it is stamped "full auto". Marking should be "automatic". Meaning the semi auto setting, as opposed to the single shot mode. Pulling bolt handle out or pressing it in switches from one to other.

IF you rifle is firing more than one shot per pull of the trigger, it is NOT functiloning as designed. None of these were built as full auto firearms. And NO, you may NOT possess a firearm in the US that does that unless it is registered as a Class III firearm with the BATFE. There are SEVERE penalties for violation.

Markings look like this? Attachment 39159

Yes they look just like that...so it is malfunctioning?

c3shooter 02-12-2012 11:59 PM

If you pull the trigger- and it goes bang more than once before you pull the trigger again, yes, it is malfunctioning.

IF it is doing that, a good first step is to field strip it and clean it good. .22 LR is filthy stuff, and getting a firing pin gunked up can do strange things.

Semi-automatic means pull trigger, goes bang once. Pull trigger again, goes bang again.

Full auto- pull trigger, goes bang bang bang bang until you release trigger.
Your rifle should NOT do that.

The last time I shot it it emptyed the tube with one triggering pull...but the last round got jammed facing down into the tube...then I cleaned it and oil but still fires full auto with .22 lr....my father has had it for years and as far as I know it has allways fired that y

Remove the stock and look at the screw that holds the rear of the trigger mechanism down. If it is loose it will fire full auto sometimes.
With it apart, cock the bolt, pull the trigger and hold it. Now pull the bolt back while holding the trigger. It should stay back until you release the trigger. If it doesn't the pin that holds the bolt may be broken or modified.
