Simple Answer here!

DUMB!

One should always wear Ear Protection when shooting at the Range or elsewhere. The only time I do not is when I am hunting. But usually dealing with only one or two shots.

Just a suggestion. I have a set of electronic muffs that amplify ambient sound, but cut off sharp sounds like gunshots.

Don't have a good feel for how well they enable directional detection, which may be important for you when hunting. But they can significantly amplify the ambient sound, so you can hear quiet sounds better.
