Tapping w/a brass punch & hammer? Very funny. Wailing with a sledge hammer? Nada. Use a front sight removal tool? They cost as much as the replacement sight, and I’d only use it once. Magickal incantations? I forgot all of mine. And I don't have a Dremel tool either.

Anybody have any ideas? I mean ones that they actually used successfully?

Put barrel in the vise and tap the sight out to the right.

they are in there reallllllly tight. brass punch and a hammer is typically how its done.

Yep brass punch and hammer. If you are worried about marring the sight base you can use layers of masking or duct tape on the side you are striking. After the sight is removed, any brass marks can be removed using a pencil eraser.

I'm not worryied about marking up the sight, I'm worried I can't get the damm think out! If a hammer & punch worked, I wouldn't be asking. I'm gonna try some penetrating oil and see if I can hack a sight removal tool from a small C-clamp.

If you are having problems already it's time to take the gun to a gunsmith. Don't take me wrong! When something isn't easy for me I take it to a gunsmith. That is why we have craftsmen. Not everyone is good at everything. If you are eager to learn you won't waste your money. Most gunsmiths will show you where you went wrong.

I am good at working on car parts on a bench. But at 6'4" 260 lb I am not going to get anything done under a lift. You get the motor or transmission out of the car I can fix it for you but don't think I am going to install it. We all have our calling in life and we all have to find our calling.

A lesson I finally learned, my family used to think I could fix anything and everything. They had my convinced, until sometimes my attempts cost more than it should to fix the things I broke trying to fix what was broke. And yes having the proper tools is key. Now if it seems to be out of my area, or life's depend on it I say let's let the pro do it. I almost fixed my daughter furnace once only to find out if it had work I would have killed them with carbon monoxide. No more never again.

My advice would be to buy the sight tool. I have used the Lyman front sight pusher many times on many different guns since I bought it 10 years ago. You use it for sight adjusting as well as removal. It is the proper tool for the job. Believe me, you will use it more than you think. I think they are about $45. It will push that sight out in 10 seconds. It will also push the new one in for you.

If the penetrating oil and the sight tool hack doesn't work today, tomorrow I'll see if the LGS has a sight tool lying around. They're closed on Sunday.

Want some bad advice?
Cut it out. Back when I didn' tknow much about gunsmiths in the area, I googled and was given the bright (not bright) idea to cut the thing out with a carbide disc. I used a small one (three) on my Dremel to do so. Did it work? Hell yeah. I have a nice set of Tech Sights on my 10/22. Was it a good idea? Hell no. The spot where i slipped and gouged part of the sight band is proof of that.

I'd go with these folks' recommendation to find a gunsmith. Every time i look at that bright silver streak on my otherwise pristine barrel, I regret not looking harder for one.
