how is a 17hmr for coyote hunting

I have a .17 and have tried calling coyotes haven't got any in just wanted to know how good a .17 is for coyote hunting

Use the 20 grain fmj and keep your shots under 100 yards. The 17 hmr is such a tack driver that at those distances it should be easy to head shoot them. Be prepared for the hate from the "that's not ethical crowd".

Thanks yeah I will

.17 for coyotes

I agree with Rdj3282,but I would extend the yardage to no more than 150 yards and when you do, be careful of the wind, the bullet drifts. I enjoy shooting this cartridge!:) Cliff!

I love my 17hmr...but it's not the best choice for coyotes. In a pinch it will work, but if you are calling them in I would go with centerfire.

I hunt a big field and I have brush that they come from know more than 200 yards long so I'm safe

IMO these are not ideal situations for the 17hmr on a coyote. At 200 yards you are much better off with a 22 caliber centerfire or bigger.

luke1999 04-17-2012 05:13 PM

Yeah that's why I'm going to call them in to 100 yards or shorter

I've shot six coyotes this year with my 17 and dropped them all in one shot at about the 150 200 yard mark the wind is a factor with the small bullets tho

200 yds. with a .17 Rim Fire all one shot kills. Do you really know what a coyote is? Do you know how far 200 yds is? Just to help you out this is a picture of a coyote.
