Quality handguns almost always cost more than rifles. I have been looking for a S&W 4" .22 Kit gun for a while now. New they are over 1K; good used ones are pretty close to that. Very hard to find.

Well I'm glad to see they still make some 22 rifles at decent prices. I'm pretty much out of the gun loop these days.I was kind of wondering if the things I used to know were still true.

Rare to find the cheapest listed being recomended most!
Looks like I might want to search for "Marlin bolt action 22"
Looks good www.ableammo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=86111

Right now I'm just wondering why 22 revolvers cost so much compared to rifles.
You ain't lookin in the right places
Here's one for $199 at Bud's.
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/72789/Marlin+XT22MTR+22M+BA+TUBE+12+SYN

And as far as revolvers...most under $200.
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php/keywords/Heritage/page/1/sort/5a
http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearch?langId=-1&storeId=10151&N=329211139+4294958119&catalogId=1 0051

Some folks talk down about Heritage...and they're usually Ruger owners.
Those who've come into them with no preconceptions, are usually quite happy with HA's
Solid little pistols that gives decades of enjoyment!

Taurus DA current-style revolvers start around $300, as do most Rugers.

And there's always Used Iver-Johnsons floating around...millions of those little .22's are all over the place. Cheaply.

You are correct that those guns from Heritage, Taurus and Iver Johnson are nice little guns for a cheap price. However, if you want a gun that is gonna last for decades and can hand down to your grandchildren, then you go Colt, S&W, Ruger, Browning, etc.

I've recently purchased my "first" Henry rimfire rifle. I'm a big fan of lever-action 22's in general but never had a Henry before.

I bought a new HT001Y (youth model) earlier this week and my wife bought one at the same time (with consecutive serial number no less ). We are casual target "plinkers" and up until now our 22cal rifles have been limited to the Marlin 39 family (39A's and Century Limited's), a Remington 552, a Browning SA22, Winchester 63 (semi-auto) and my wife's Steven's Favorite (single shot).

I have been more than pleasantly surprised at the qualities of the little lever action Henry.. Surprisingly accurate, nice wood, and the action is SLICK, SLICK, SLICK... Actually much more smooth than any of my 5 lever action Marlins.

If you compare the receiver area between the Henry and the Marlins the Marlins win, hands-down.. But I'm betting with reasonable care a Henry will outlast an owner, and IF it wears out the warranty of the Henry will getcha' a new one anyway..

I love my Marlins, but I have really enjoyed the little Henry. I have ordered a 4 power scope for it, and when I get it on and adjusted I'm gonna do some "head to head" plinking with my scoped 1996 39A, and scoped Winchester 63.

Just nice to have choices, and I'd say anyone looking for a lotta' 22 cal rifle for a minimum price the Henry is a mighty attractive option..

No offense to anyone who might disagree with my comments.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

Accurate isn't the word lol my dads old semi auto.....I believe a model 60 can still consistently bust eggs at 100 yards not bad for a semi .22

Marlin - bold or semi
Remington 10/22 - semi

Flip a coin....either will be money well spent on a good quality .22 that will bring lots of years of enjoyment.

I believe the marlin will be cheaper. I own a 795 22lr autoloader and I'm amazed how accurate it is and was half the price of the well known kinda overated ruger 1022

I agree with the henry being the better gun but it should be for how much it cost. its one of the most expensive stock 22s you can buy

Thanks for all the info. I'm not in a huge hurry, but I have noticed some prices going up sence I last looked! Looks like I should make a decision before long.

Anyone have a Marlin Model 983? It's about $220 new but out of stock.Bet they've stopped making them sence I want one.

Really thinking about a Marlin M60 or Marlin 795.

I want a 22 that'll hit what I aim at, is reliable and fairly cheap.

I don't want a 10/22 if it needs mods. Just tell me about a fairly cheap .22lr, no mods needed model that will ruin a rabbit's day at about 75yds. I'm talking no scope!

this is my suggestion and the one i make to all looking for a 22 rifle. both the Marlin and the Ruger are good rifles. if you're wanting to pull the gun out of the box and at most just put a scope on it and go shooting, then buy the Marlin M60 or M795. if you enjoy tinkering and wanting to customize your 22 rifle, then buy the Ruger 10/22. there are more parts and accessories for the 10/22 than the Marlins, but IMO, the Marlins are just a little more accurate out of the box.
