help on 17's

I need info on types, rifles in the moderate price range and expected accuracy and effectiveness.
I am getting interested in getting a 17 for chucks out to 200 yards and target shooting but really don't know much along this line.
Any help will be appreciated

There is plenty to choose from.

17 Fireball (Necked down 221 Fireball)
17 Remington
17 Ackley-Hornet (My favorite)

I would say try to find a 17 fireball as they are just a little slower than the 17 rem and offer less fouling and longer barrel life.

Here is a good list of 17 caliber wildcat cartridges and this place has tons of info on the sub-calibers. (Smaller than .224")

Mine is a Marlin, model 917V, .17hmr. The most accurate, out of the box, rimfire I've ever owned. All I did with mine is add a scope (Leupold) and it is a tack-driver. Two hundred yards; no problem. A pure delight to shoot.
The .17 hmr, absolutely destroys varmints with clean, quick kills.

It is almost like the .17 HNR is an unfair advantage when shooting Gophers. But I'll keep doing it

The 17 Gr bullet fired from a 17 HM2 has about 100 ft/lb of energy at 80 yards ,54 ft/lb at 200 yards. The 17 Gr bullet fired from a 17 HMR has about 100 ft/lb of energy at 150 yards, 72 ft/lb at 200 yards. The 25 Gr HP bullet fired from a 17 Fireball has about 460 ft/lb of energy at 200 yards. The 25 Gr HP bullet fired from a 17 Remington has about 490 ft/lb of energy at 200 yards. I use all the 17s for shooting prairie dogs which weigh about three pounds. If I were to go chuck shooting I would use the 17 Fireball round ...
