Default First .22 Rifle

I just had the pleasure of making it to 18 years old, and decided I'd spend the birthday money I've had for 3 months on a .22. I recently enlisted in the Air Force and am waiting to go in. I know I want either a AK47 or an AR15. But beyond that I have no idea where to start. Any pointers in the right direction?

So do you want a 22lr or an AR/AK type rifle that shoots 22lr?

S&W M&P 15-22 is well thought of.

Ruger 10-22, Marlin model 60, Henry lever action, Mossberg Tactical Plinkster, CZ bolt action.... Too many choices to list.

I want an AR/AK that shoots 22. I heard good things about CZ. They make an AR?

S&W M&P 15-22 might be a good choice.

So I'll take a look at the M&P 15 .22. Any suggestions on a good scope?

Imo you dont need a scope.
I red dot or holosight, hell even irons are ok.

If you are set on a scope, leopuld, nikon, bushnell, and many others make excellent optics.

So I guess that's a resounding yes for the S&W. Is the handguard metal or plastic? If plastic can somebody suggest a good metal one? Thanks.

If you want to go inexpensive, yet still good, take a look at ARMSCOR/RIA/Rock Island Armoury...
they've come a LONG way from the 1980's...new CNC machinery a few years ago...
and their new designs for .22lr's are Solid!!
http://www.armscor.com.ph/products.htm

The MAK-22 is their AK variant...
and the MIG-22 is their new M16 variant...where before it was the 1600, which lacked style...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=naT5v_PaoCUTheir 1911 in .22lr or .22TCM is SWEET!!
