Well NY is not the great white north. I live in Minnesota and if you don't believe this is the great white north....come visit in the winter.

We got coyotes that get mistaken for wolves. Yep...we will have to agree to disagree. However the original post was about some recommendations so let's get back to our regularly scheduled program. .

7.62, Here is a great article...
Compared: .17 HMR and .22 WMR (Magnum)
What I have found w/ the 17gr is they get zero penetration, but explode on impact. The 20gr do much better on Woodchucks, 20..25 pound vermin. Coyotes here can get up to 65 pounds. Average is 45 pounds. Even w/ a 20gr. penetration of the skull, unless it is in the ear or eye is still questionable. At 50 yards it will do the job, but so will a 12ga w/ #4 buck and they don't run. I hate to see any animal suffer and yotes will run.

i have personally killed hogs and coyotes with a savage 93 down here in florida, we usually hunt them with marlin 60 .22... but you cant be scared of the pigs. for a well placed shot a 17 will kill pigs inside 100 yrds, and coyotes to 150. wont drop them, but will definently kill them

Appreciate the advice. 17HMR was unfamiliar territory. I get hankerin for a new gun and I get all fired up about it for a week or so, then I cool off and want something different. Next week it'll be something else...go figure.

I have a lot of rifles and weapons but I must be honest. On a whim I was in Wally World one Saturday while my wife was shopping. As usual I was in the sporting goods section when I saw a little Marlin 917-V Heavy Barrel in the case. Like a kid in a toy store it was calling my name and was fairly inexpensive. Anyway I brought it home. A week or so later I put a Rifle Basix Trigger in it. I must say I really enjoy shooting this little rifle as much as any I own. And better yet! 50 rounds only runs me about $12-$14. And accuracy is phenomenal and at 2500 fps. it is fast. The crows hate it!

I like this guy!! Crows, not coyotes. I wish here in NH I could use a rifle for crows, Shotgun only.

Best deal on a .17 would be a Savage.
A Gunsmith Named Scott Null at Savagegunsmithing offeres a deal where if you get the accuracy package done on any Savage rimfire, he will get you any Savage rifle, any scope, mount and rings at wholesale price.
His accuracy package runs about $180. and includes Bedding, re crown the muzzle, fantastic trigger job, 1/8" bottom metal and lapping the high spots out of the barrel.
He did my BRJ 22 LR and it has shot a best 5 shot group just under.1" at 50 yards.
He a Master Riflesmith and I'm so impressed with my Savage, I still can't get the smile off my face.
The .17's usually shoot .1 to .3" at 100 yards when he's done. The lack of match ammo makes it harder for them to group like a 22lr because of the good ammo available for them.
You can reach him at 208-313-1570 or SavageGunsmithing
He sure did me right.
