There's an article in the December issue of SHOOTING TIMES on this exact subject. Essentially, the general consensus was if you are using a 22LR for personal defense go with a heavier, high velocity solid point variety in a brand that will work reliably in your particular weapon. HP ammo will work also (a good summer option, particularly in a rifle where you get max velocity) but often lacks the penetration ability of the solid stuff, especially if shooting through heavy or multi layers of clothing, something to consider since winter is upon us.
