Maybe I'm confusing this with something else, but I thought Ruger advised against the Stingers in the 10/22.

I saw that an adams and bennet barrel advises against stingers. Thats straight from the master catalog.

There's an article in the December issue of SHOOTING TIMES on this exact subject. Essentially, the general consensus was if you are using a 22LR for personal defense go with a heavier, high velocity solid point variety in a brand that will work reliably in your particular weapon. HP ammo will work also (a good summer option, particularly in a rifle where you get max velocity) but often lacks the penetration ability of the solid stuff, especially if shooting through heavy or multi layers of clothing, something to consider since winter is upon us.

Stingers and one other of the hyper .22's have brass that is a bit longer than regular .22lr brase. Most all of the aftermarket barrels have one kind or another of a MATCH chamber and they are shorter than what comes in even a standard .off the rack .22lr rifle. Match chambers will shoot there best with standard velocity ammo reather than with the faster stuff also.
