I have three finished 10/22s, all modified for reliability and increased accuracy (not target/bench level). Not big dollar investments, around twice the cost of a factory carbine when finished. I modify the triggers lightly, have the bolts head-spaced, firing pin cross-pinned and an improved extractor is installed. The factory barrel gets re-chambered and I add a Gunsmither barrel block to maintain barrel/receiver alignment. Sounds more expensive than it really is and the difference is quite dramatic. Each rifle is fitted with irons as well as a small variable power scope in QD rings. (Scope and rings are not included in my cost estimation above).
I believe these rifles could be very important in many kinds of SHTF scenarios.

And get the CLEAR plastic magazines so you can easily see which mags have how many rounds in them.

I have a 10-22 and my wife has a S&W which she loves.

Thanks for the info brother!

Great .22, accessories are readily available as well. When you get magazines get the ones with METAL lips, avoid the plastic lipped magazines.

I was thinking of getting the Ruger 10/22 .... That was my fist choice.

I own one as well. My wife shoots it from time to time, and even as a pure novice to shootign, she is acceptably accurate with it.
The only mod I did to mine was to replace the factory sights with a set of TechSights (just a 10/22 version of M16 sights). The factory "Gold Dot" sight system is trash, in my opinion. Folks also like to slap a cheap scope on them, which I hear works nicely.

Yeah ... I was trying to get the wife into shooting some of my AR. That was not a good idea. I think it turned her off pretty quick. I think that she is a little afraid of it. So that's why I am looking into a 10/22. The wife maybe just a gun tot'n woman, but thats ok with me.
