I have a Savage BRJ, 22 LR that is my favorite rifle.
It shot in the low.4" range when new.
I took it to my gunsmith, Scott at Savagegunsmithing for one of his accuracy jobs.
His accuracy jobs usually get about .3" better groups on average from a MKII Savage.

After the accuracy job, the rifle shot a best of .117". As you can guess, I was thrilled beyond beleif.

Today Scott calls me and tells me he has developed a way of lapping the barrels on the .22LR and .17 caliber Savage rimfires that has show dramatic reductions in groups.
He was like a little kid, so happy with the results he was gettting. He asked me to bring my riflr over.

I went to the 50 YD range behind his shop and shot a 5 shot group, not my best of .240", throwing out one called flier.

We took the rifle into the shop and Scott found two rough spots in the barrel. He hand lapped the barrrel.
We went outside to the range again.
Starting with a clean barrel, Scott fired 10 fouling shots of some cheap box ammo then put 5 rounds of Wolf MT in the mag.

He proceeded to fire a 5 shot group that measured .062". That's less than 1/10th of an inch.

I don't think you could wipe the smile off my face for anything.

The first pic is the .062" group Scott fired, the second pic is the 5 shot group that I fired prior to Scott lapping the barrel.

The third pic is of a group fired from a thin barreled Savage MKII. The guy had not had the barrel lapped and sent it back to Scott as the best it would shoot was .6", after the lapping you can see it shot .127".

Between the accuracy job, barrel lapping and using Scotts 1/8" thick bottom metal, I now have a rifle that will shoot with any 22LR, I still can't stop smiling.

The Savage MKII's are fantastic rifles right out of the box, but put in the hands of a Master Gunsmith, they shoot like a $5000. Annie.

My rifle is a BRJ model, accurized and barrel lapped and has 1/8" thick bottom metal on it. The action is torqued to 25 inch pounds.

It really is. Think about it is that it has improved every rifle he's lapped.
He really is a Master Gunsmith and I've watched him do several. He's pretty conseritive in the process. The Savage rimfire's have very shallow rifling. He's lapped hundreds of centerfire rifles with much deeper rifling, but had to work out a way to improve the accuracy without doing any harm.
Every barrel he's done has shown a darn good improvement, especially if the barrel is only average to begin with.

My barrel was a pretty good one, but he found two tight spots in it. Working them got me under the magic .1" mark which is darn hard to do.

I've got to come clean with you guys. I didn't figure the group size, someone else did. When I checked it, it came out just a hair over .1", which is still a major improvement from the Accurizing.
I'm pleased as can be.

Thing is, we started with a clean barrel, put 10 shots of cheap ammo thru it then shot 5 rounds of Wolf Match. As you know, a Savage shoots better dirty (Did I just say DIRTY???) so I expect to slightly improve on that group or die trying.

And for you perverts out there, here's a picture of my girl You can look, even think about her, but don't touch.
