22lr for varmints

I'm new hi everyone
What do you think about taking coyotes with high velocity segmenting 22lr bullet

unclebear 12-18-2012 08:23 PM

welcome, It's not the preferred round to use against them but it works I've seen a guy take a coyote with a 22 he took one shot into the head and it went down that said that was the only one he got that day. Most people prefer a 223 or a 22-250 something along those lines, But even the 17HMR is a nice round to take the buggers with. Really it just depends on your skill as a hunter and how good you are with your firearm. I even read a article in fish fur and trapping about a guy that hunts them in thick pines with a shotgun so really it's possible but it just depends on your skill and what nature wants to do for you.

I'm confident In my skill
I practice my squeril rifle shooting tums tablet at 25 yards so a miss is near devastating lol

Head shots are what I always go for when hunting small and medium game with my air rifles but I want to be able to shoot at the lungs (never ever attempting a coyote with an air gun only coon and rabbits and what not)

Would cheap cci stingers take them down with a heart shot?
Or would 1700 fps 36 grain segmenting hollow point be a better choice?

My only response is see what your rifle likes best. I do not have a .22 that "likes" stingers. Mini mag might be better just see what your .22 likes.

So anything I can shoot straight will kill a coyote with a chest shot?

Depends on how long it takes to expire. When you say chest shot, are you talking front? Most new yote hunters shoot high for the anatomy of a yote. .22lr is not a good choice, either is the .17HMR. If you can make head shots either will work. I've yet to see a Coyote that will give you the time for one.

If it's comeing head on it's easy head shot right between the eyes
If it's running past me it's easir to double tap the chest area then make 1 head shot that's why I ask

So how far it runs is not an issue. Good luck.
