Just a personal opinion but...
You are way ahead in simply buying a nice M-4 and for $160. you can drop in a .22 lr conversion is less time than it took you to read this sentence....
Look alike around 5-600 bucks, not modifiable... M-4 8-900 bucks (after the rush ends) and you can customize the heck out of it, upper, trigger, stock, sights to name a few...
That way you have the 5.56 /.223 and can practice with the cheaper (well may be not now) .22 lr ammo, ultra low recoil, supper quiet, and it will be a hoot to shoot!!

Default I have Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22lr. I love it. Quad rail. Threaded barrel. A1 sites.

[QUOTE=JTJ;1173841]The S&W M&P 15-22 is an excellent choice. Controls and break down is the same as the AR. My wife loves hers.[/

I have Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22lr. I love it.] Quad rail. Threaded barrel. A1 style iron sites. I get a lot of complements at the range. They think it's a 223/556 until I fire it. I have had offers to by it. Got it New October 2012. $529.00 Cost way more now. Came with 25 round mag. Got 2 more for $16.95 each online. Very fun to shoot. Accurate too. Easy to clean. It is a full AR. Just shoots 22LR. You won't be disappointed. Adjustable stock too

ok guys took me a couple of days to get back due to work.

This is my M4 OPS before I added the front gas block. The huge scope was a left over and I have replaced it with a smaller on but your get the idea.

OK... the fwd asst is non functional. the dust cover will not latch in up position. the receiver is cut out there.
on the outside it has just about all of the same options as a true AR chassis.

Like others have stated, as long as it is a brand name rifle you should be good to go for accessories.

My flip up sights turned out to weigh over a lb. that t handle is not light either. that is the one true drawback. it is easy add so much weight that one does not want to carry the things. something to consider

I have the Umarex Colt C 4 and the S&W M&P 15 22 and love both, however I favor the Colt 10k+ rounds with no malfunctions......The Colt is a bit more accurate than the 15 22 from the bench form 25 to 100 yards.
Dan,
I got one from Midway USA. it was $60-ish plus shipping. what I liked was that the 22lr Colt has the same diameter outer barrel cover as the 5.56 normal barrel. I slipped it on, set it back enough to fit a bayonet and tightened the screws down. since the 22 is blow back I didn't need to mess with the gas port or tube. I put it on so that I could have the option of going back to iron sights since my front post was canted and not worth a hoot. I got the one with the lug just because I have a bayonet and why not at least set the rifle up to be able to use it, even if it is display. Lol

I purchased a Colt AR 22 a couple months ago. No it is not a AR in every aspect, but it is a 22 not a 556. I gave it to my wife, and got her pink furniture for it. Looks pretty sweet. Got it at Scheels for 450 ish with two 30 rd mags. The pink dress up job was another 100.
