It's a shame the semi-auto .17HMR didn't work out, if it was a good gun I wouldn't mind having one. I still wouldn't mind a decent scoped .17 bolt gun for target shooting.

on the cheap cant beat the ruger 10/22. its about a bullet proof rimfire as you can get. they are pretty good out of the box and can only be made better by the extremely wide selection of aftermarket drop in parts. there are a wide wide wide variety of aftermarket stocks. even mcmillan makes custom stocks for the 10/22 and their main business is stocks and rifles centered around center fire sniper type weapons. anyway the stock base model 10/22 is a damn good choice for the money.
