Fresh eggs on golf tees at least 50 yards away. A bit expensive.

Old golf balls on tees are fun and re-usable, if found.

Others include: metal swingers, silhouettes, chalk targets (Walmart), small frozen apples on trees, ice cubes made with food-coloring added to wate, empty rifle, pistol, shotgun shells, tennis balls.

Balloons make a very satisfying target, especially when introducing new shooters to the sport. It takes some work blowing them up, but the visual feedback is immediate.

After they're inflated, you can tack the mouth to a support, or hang them from string. This has them moving if there's a breeze.

I understood exactly what you were saying the first time. It may not be in the barrel but it is covering the muzzle, not a good idea even if it does fall off freely.

I have to go with Dcomf on this one. Just not a smart thing to do. Once more you are obstructing the barrel. I know that some 22 rifle barrels are smaller than a 12 ga shell but there are many different rifles out there with many different barrel dimensions. Plus you take a chance of causing damage to the crown of your rifle. Once that is done it is going to cost you $100+ to have your barrel recrowned.

I shoot whatever trash I can find... Soda bottles and cans, beer cans... I've shot at gallon water jugs or detergent bottles, pumpkins, cantalopes, etc...

My favorite is taking 4-5 gallon jugs and putting them into a line, shoot into the first and usually the bullet will stop before the last one. Catching a nice hollowpoint bullet is pretty sweet to look at.

I think the best tripwas shooting at the cow, chicken, dog, and pig that was leftover from my nephews birthday party (October)... see the attached pics below:

(edit - The land we shoot on is posted as private property. We shoot on a downhill slope, so any bullet that passes our target is aimed towards the ground... And, we always do a check for people prior to shooting too... And, we're at a cabin that has no neighbors for at least a mile in each direction)... Just incase anyone flames for not having a backstop.

This was our Tide setup... 5 bottles filled with water. The last pic is the hollowpoints recovered from one of the back bottles.

hillbilly - That was taken with my Nikon D50, which takes something like 2.5 pictures a second. I've since upgraded to a D80, which is even a little quicker.

I've got a lot of other shots in "mid-blowup" too... I just like that one.

And thanks. The land actually belongs to my girlfriends grandfather. It's like 2 acres of mountain area, and there's a cabin that sits on the property that we use... It's all hunting land over that way, but it's really a great place to get away... There's a large pavillion with 4 tables that we use for family cookouts and what not.

Besides that, my family also owns 2 cabins up in Northern PA (Sullivan County area), but that's a little further drive. We're actually going up this weekend, which should be fun.

If you need a cool target for kids or first time shooters go and buy some cheap red pop in cans. Just shake them up and they explode with a red mist when they are hit When my kids were young I always bought a 12 pack for them to shoot.
