Hey guys,
My dad is looking to get a .22 revolver. This will be mostly jsut a plinker, but at the same time, he is like I am. What good is an unloaded gun? Right? Well I know that a .22lr is decent (I carry one in semi-auto for a truck gun), but we were wondering how much better is a .22mag? I know that it packs a good bit more punch, but how much more? Also, what is the price of mag ammo vs. lr? Lots of folks look down upon rimfire, but with a good quality ammunition, it's just as reliable and affective as anything else out there, but I wanna know more about the .22 magnum.

.22WMR is a good deal more expensive than .22LR, but there hasn't ever been as much demand either. It is more powerful, but not devastatingly so. There is a good selection of bullet types and loads, to cover a good range of needs. You can get polymer tips even, unlike it's little brother the .22LR. And that is where the biggest difference lies - the .22WMR has a standard bullet design, making jacketed and polymer tip bullets possible, while the 'heeled' bullet of the .22LR prevents this.
There is a slight difference in bullet diameter, but NOT enough to affect safety in the bore of a gun - the case sizes though - big difference! Never shoot .22LR in a .22WMR chamber! If you get a 'convertible' revolver, you'll get both cylinders, and use the same bore. Depending on the exact bore dimension, it will likely prove more accurate with one load but not the other.
Best singleaction is the Ruger Singlesix, but for just plinking, the Heritage Roughrider is a decent handgun. Look on their website, and you'll see they have a lot of options - grip shape, finish, barrel length, fixed or adjustible sights. Get one fully tricked out, the price will be comparable to the Ruger.
I have an older Tanfoglio TA76 revolver with both cylinders - I shoot mostly .22WMR in it, as I have other more accurate .22LR pistols. __________________

I've always liked the .22 mag, having owned several over the years. Some I wish I still had. In it's own right, the .22 lr is a great little round, Twenty-two ammo has been around since about 1857, so there must be something to it, depending on what you wish to use them for.

Forgive me, but I can't pass up a "22 mag" string without once again bringing attention to the lonnng-awaited Kel-Tec PMR30... IF... big IF... Kel-Tec actually gets this out in numbers, AND it proves reliable, I figure it may change the whole 22-mag-for-handguns perception. Though patience regarding its debut is wearing kinda thin, there's still a LOT of interest in this gun!

I, too, am looking forward to the promised Kel-Tec offering. I would rather not be the beta tester so I am waiting for the first round of (inevitable) recalls before I buy one. __________________

If you want a plinker, go with .22lr.
I love my S&W model 17. It's a 10 shot revolver and it will eat anything you put into it. That's awfully handy if your .22 rifle is finicky. __________________ Scott

My .22 target gun is a lr. 9 shot H&R. Love it! I can still shoot all of our .22 rifles w/ the same ammo. For SD, I'd pass.

Why not get a single six and have both? My dad has one and it's a great shooter. They have cheapened the blued model with a groove rear sight and plastic grips but used ones are available. If you go stainless you still get rosewood and adjustable rear. __________________

It is hard to beat the Ruger Single Six with a 6 1/2" barrel.
The other part of the question is that it's going to cost you around $10-$15/50 rd box for ammo depending on what you get. __________________
