Default .22 lr conversion for 5.56 AR

I have a S&W 15 and I have bin looking into a .22 conversion for it. I noticed most recommend shooting highvelocity jacketed rounds. I was wondering if there are any out there I can use high, standard, and maybe even subsonic velocity ammo? And can I shoot non jacketed bullets through? I have bin leaning to the cmmg kit.

I have the CMMG kit and it works flawless, I also use the cheap winchester 333's or 555's in it without any issue . I have not had good luck with the remington .22lr ammo in it its under powered and doesnt cycle every time. CCIs work well but of course they are more expensive . I have also had decent luck with the federal bulk stuff except maybe 10-15 misfires out of a box of 500 . Also have used the aguilia rounds without any issue . on sub sonic stuff you need to research it because some are not meant to cycle semi auto rifles. Aguilia makes a 60 gr subsonic in .22lr that cycles a AR just fine and they are more accurate in the tighter turning barrels.

Just remember this .22lr ammo is dirty , I started losing tight groupings at around 700 rounds and it had to be cleaned and deleaded with some lead removing chemicals. Also there is alot of unburnt powder and crap that comes back thru the gas tube shooting a couple .223 rounds when your done will clean up the gas tube . One last thing you will have to clean the guts of the lower up every once in a while and the bolt and chamber will need more cleaning also . .22 lr is just plain dirty but it sure makes it cheaper to shoot and is just as much fun

Thanks for the help. I have used rem subsonic in my marlin 60. I was hoping I could use it in my AR I guess I'll have to see what works and what dont. Thanks for giving me a place to start.

No problem , those 700 rds of .22lr made a mess I have a rifle with over 4000 rds of .223 on it that not been cleaned and it is still cleaner than the rifle with 700 rounds of .22lr .

I was considering a .22 conversion kit for my AR, but after shooting several hundred .22 rounds and noticing how dirty the round is, I am opting for a dedicated .22, like the S&W M&P 22.

the conversion kits are great for cheap practice on th esame rifle. however you will get far better accuracy and less mess with a dedicated .22. as far as amo goies my frinds ki tonly runs cci. tried a few others but they jammed

Another reason I wont one, is for if shtf I would have the .22lr option without having to carry another gun. Also why my next gun will be a G22 with 9mm,.357sig and .22 conversion.
