Hi Im Not new to the Gun world I am Of the age of 14 Years Recently I would like to know if My dad were to purchase a .22 bolt action rifle marlin modle 980s would It be legal for me to shoot his rifle at a range with him next to me as a supervisor?

What type of kick does it have? (Im 5'6 140Lbs)

The 22 won't kick at all, you shooting a rifle right beside your dad shouldn't be an issue either unless the range has some rule against it or age limit.

The stainless 980S runs around $250, and about $200 for the blue 980. If you're willing to wait a month or two the new XT-22 rifles from Marlin will be out, they have an adjustable trigger for roughly the same price as the 900 series they're replacing.

I can't comment on the state laws in your area, but there should be web sites for that information, the local range may be able to help too.
