I have had this same experience (in VT). I was confused as to why I was asked at the time, but I figured it out eventually (I was 21 when this happened, apparently I looked all of 18 but not 21)
Same at Walmarts here in Michigan too-"is this for a handgun or rifle?"And I am 30 and look it.I usually just said handgun,but really my answer is "both" since I have a rifle in .22 also.

Winds, Jake- please read what I posted. That is the FEDERAL law which applies everywhere in the US. That is also the law that a DEALER is licensed under. If a DEALER (including WalMart) gets caught selling any ammo to a 16 yr old, the BATFE will take their license in a heartbeat. No geography to it.

so it looks like i can buy 22lr's. these laws are weird in illinois. its like the pistol law, i can posses a pistol at 18,im 19 but cant purchess through a ffl? that stupid.

and you may also buy a handgun from a private individual at 18.
