I made the mistake of getting a 17hmr for groundhog after having a 22wmr. The 17 didnt have near the stopping power of the 22wmr. The 17 was a Savage 93 that had bolt issues so that might have been the cause but the Ruger 96 22wmr held a better group shooting hollow points than the savage did shooting vmaxs. I used a Marlin 22wmr that belonged to a friend on spring. I was very impressed that gun. First groundhog I shot was at 140yrds and it moved about half an inch after I pulled the trigger. That was with a 22wmr vmax when they first came out.

The savage with the accutrigger is a sweet gun I have one. decided to see just how accurate it was and locked it down in a gun vise and it just makes one hole at one hundred yards. thats far better than I can shoot it free handed. so i reckon any misses are my fault. My 93 seems to like the cci 17gr. tnt's the best. If you want to shoot ground hogs you have to head shoot them but that's no problem for the 17. Lot's of people like the marlin's and cz's so they must be good too but you can't beat the accutrigger. By the way all the 17hmr ammo is made by cci. they use the vmax bullets but it's all assembled by cci.
