I made the mistake of getting a 17hmr for groundhog after having a 22wmr. The 17 didnt have near the stopping power of the 22wmr. The 17 was a Savage 93 that had bolt issues so that might have been the cause but the Ruger 96 22wmr held a better group shooting hollow points than the savage did shooting vmaxs. I used a Marlin 22wmr that belonged to a friend on spring. I was very impressed that gun. First groundhog I shot was at 140yrds and it moved about half an inch after I pulled the trigger. That was with a 22wmr vmax when they first came out.
