I have never noticed that the sound of gunfire frightened game. Animals hunker down for a few minutes then resume their activities. You can empty a 300 mag in the woods, 15 minutes later birds are singing and squirrels are scampering. The activities of song birds and other non game critters are what puts game animals at ease. If you pay attention you will notice that turkey and deer stay together. The turkey can see better than anything in the woods. The senses of deer are well documented.

Old_Crow is right. I suggest that he should start a "Mythbusted" thread. There are 100's of myths that a whole lot of people believe are 100% true that aren't at all true. Animals and their sense of smell is an example. If a big buck catches even a hint of a human smell he will bug out to the next county is one. I personally witnessed a trophy white tail approach and then smell a chain saw sitting on the ground... and the saw was running... Hello...

I just spotted a fat ground hog under my back deck. That is the line between living with nature and critter control.
Time to pull the .17 HMR out!

If one matches the right bullets to the right rifle, its just as, if not more precise...
It is why many in my area have become rather fond of Marlin rifles...after having been zapped at the range by a 25MN...

Its also why enjoyment comes at up to 160 yards when hunting coyotes at my uncle's farm...with that same .22WMR

Default noise

The 17 HMR is much louder than a .22. The speed of sound is about 1150 feet per second. The 17 hmr goes about 2500 ft per sec. Therefore much louder noise. Cliff
