I haven't been on in a long while but I am looking to buy a new rimfire and wanted yalls opinions. As the title says its between the .17 hmr and the .22 wmr (mag). Shooting will be done from 50-150 yards and I will be hunting squirrels, rabbits, and coyotes, but mainly squirrel. I would like the rifle to be pretty accurate (I already know which rifle I'll get for each caliber.) Please take into consideration price of ammo. Also, I already have a .22 lr. Please, if you have either or both calibers, jump in and try to give me auggestions/comparisons. Thanks in advance!

Well, I don't know if this helps, but I just picked up a Savage 93R17 FVSS in .17HMR. Seems to be a really nice little rifle. I paid $325 for the rifle. It comes with one 5 round magazine. Those mags aren't cheap for what they are! They cost about $35 bucks apiece.
I topped it with a Bushnell Legend 4.5-14x44mm. I have only had it to the range twice, however it has been pretty sweet so far....:) http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...421/003-10.jpg http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...r421/004-2.jpg http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...r421/005-4.jpg |

Go with the 17 HMR! You will be amazed at the accuracy and speed (2500 fps) of the little round. Of all the big rifles I have I enjoy my Marlin 917V Rifle most of all. And I can go to Walmart and get a box of 50 rounds for around $12.00.
It will shoot a sub 1 inch group at 100 yards with no problem from the bench. The Savage rifles are also very nice with the Accutrigger. I believe Marlin has improved their triggers since I purchased mine as I have been advised. But I put a Rifle Basix trigger in the Marlin and set it at 2.5 lbs. I think you will be more than happy with the 17 HMR. 03 03 |
.17HMR or .22WMR
I am impressed with the .17 HMR. I have a Savage 93 in .17 and I am quite pleased with it's accuracy and speed. I got it for,175.00 with the accu -trigger, an excellent price. Bottom line is I like the .17HMR Cartridge.Marlin in the 17HMR is also an excellent choice!:D Cliff

I would go into a few forums based on varmit hunting and read up on personal experiences and what they say about the 17hmr for use on coyotes and bob cats.

onenut,
Honestly the 17 HMR is a little on the light side for coyotes and bobs. But with a well placed shot they will do the job. The secret is it must be a well placed shot with the 17 HMR and little room for error to make a clean kill. But as stated of all the caliber rifles I have, I love my little inexpensive Marlin 17 HMR. And enjoy shooting it as much as any of the others. They are FINE little rifles! 03 03 |
I pick the 17hmr too. My favorite shooter is my savage 17hmr. If you want to shoot larger game go with the 20 grain fmj and brain pan shots. The nice thing abou the 17hmr is, it isn't hard to make well placed shots.
