AR stands for ArmaLite (ARmalite), the original company also made a couple shotguns - I think the AR-8 and AR-17 - and today's ArmaLite has pistols with the AR prefix. Anyway, ArmaLite, ArmaLite Rifle or American Rifle - I'm happy with any of them.
In fact one of the CS people at ArmaLite has for his a signature "AR stands for ArmaLite"
The biggest issue with assembling an AR isn't so much getting the parts together right - it's getting the right parts together. You'll remember the quality of a gun long after you forget how much you paid for it.
