Nor is it intended to be. That is the job of my PSL-54C.

What kind of grouping do you expect at 1000 yards?

I expect these guys are getting sub moa accuracy what with all the time and moeny they are investing.

Here's a guy doing 1/4 moa, but with a bolt action .223
http://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/ultimate-sniper-rifle-3-inches-at-1000-yards-tactical-rifles/

3 inch groups at 1000 yards? um yeah that's crazy. Lots of ARs are capable of 1/2 moa, that'd be 5 inch groups at 1000 yards.

Even with a bench vise, I don't think I could do that.

I'd get a Scar over a mini 14.

An AR is a great choice for a SHTF rifle and they can be accurate to 1000 yards, but if you want a good, solid, reliable rifle that's useful up close and is definately at least area accurate at a 1000 yards but still packs a punch, get an M1A. Throw whatever kinda optic you like on it, not even necessary if you ask me, other than that no mods really needed.

Great range, limited ammo, an all around nice rifle. I support this choice as well, but I still prefer my AK.

How much damage is a 223 going to do at 1000 yards? I am thinking that when I was in basic they told us that the max effective range of an M16 was 600 meters.

With all due respect, the M16A1 & A2 has a maximum effective range of 300 meters (328.1 yards). If I had to guess at the damage, I would say that you would hit the target and piss it off. maybe a loyal .223 (5.56mm) shooter will chime on this.

lol pretty much. If I had to guess I'd say a 5.56 would hit about as hard at a 1000 yards as a .22LR does at a 100 yards. Potentially accurate, but pointless. And yeah, I wouldn't count on a 5.56 putting a critter on it's ass past 300, but it still aint gonna feel too good at 5 or 6.

IIRC the fragmentation range of a 5.56 M193 is approximately 175 yards for a 16", 150 yards for 14.5" barrels

I don't recall range for a 20" barrel.

Anything beyond these ranges will result in a .22 caliber hole in the target, unless you have projectiles specifically designed to expand..
