Heres a good read. "I can build a better rifle for less money!" - M4Carbine.net Forums
Some good discussion and companys.

I plan on following this build becuase if it can be done then I like the idea of a good $600 rifle. Thats half the cost, which means I can spend more on optics

In my earlier replies I wasnt trying to dog you, just that I have been looking to build a Mil Spec rifle for as cheap as possible and I keep ending up around $800 without optics.

Do you have any experience with the PSA products I keep reading about that are cheap that guys are seeming to like and starting to use in builds as a way of saving money? http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php

The only thing about model 1 you have to look at is that it doesn't come with a BCG for the listed, 330 price, you have to add one. so it ends up being around 450 for a basic. That's Average I'd suppose. there are cheaper as you can tell, but Model 1 is pretty forthcoming with what parts they use too, not sure about some of the others who sell the really cheap parts.

This has been touched upon but guys here seem to be overly polite. The amount of money you spend on a rifle doesn't mean it's not cheap. You can spend $3k on a cheap rifle. I think a good way of putting it is, "polishing a turd."

You can put $2k of "bolt-on" furniture and the likes on a POS rifle from a questionable manufacturer and still have a pile of AR unreliability.

Or you can spend $300 on a Bravo Company complete lower and pin it to a $600 Bravo Company upper and have a proven, "battle capable", ultra reliable rifle.

It all depends on what you want and what you think is important. To me furniture is secondary to the mechanical and material quality of a rifle.

In my mind PSA is good quality and probably the lowest I'm willing to go. They have a nice $429 upper that would make a nice range rifle. They also have a $540ish kit minus stripped lower receiver.

I wouldn't mess w/ anything like this. You'll end up spending more in the long run getting it to run reliably.

I'm with mjkeat on this one for the most part. like no matter how much crap you slap on an old romanian stamped AK it'll still be the same crap internals compared to a russian model. Same thing goes for the AR15s and their manufacturers. Most of them are pretty decent..I think Olympia? is the only one to avoid like the plague and other than that you can be mostly safe until you start finding super cheap parts..like if you're getting a whole gun fully assembled for 400 bucks you're gonna start wondering about it considering that's what most people spend on their lower between the grips/stock/lpk and receiver.

There's a list of manufacturers/assemblers I and many don't trust, Olympic being one of them. A couple from the list have been mentioned in this thread.

Edit: I somewhat dissagree w/ the Romanian comment, lol

ok so the lower and lower parts kit is on its way as of thursday, the rest i just figured up shipping and taxes,

the grand total of this build to my door is only $641.75

it could be cheaper if i didnt go with the M16 BCG insted of semi auto BCG, black plated gas tube, MOE hand guard, ACE stock, or the heavy buffer.

not bad $641.75 to get an AR-15 just how i want it.
