There is also a valid argument for it being the one you can afford to buy and take home.

A DPMS or Oly in your closet is better (for you) than a top end Noveske or LM&Ton the shelf at the LGS.

LaRue, Lewis, Noveske, KAC, Colt, Barrett, JP, BCM, Wilson, etc. - any of the top tier manufacturers are a toss up. Now you'll get a bunch of single word "'nuff said" posts promoting the rifle they've chosen - and then there's the "I can build a better one myself" crowd.

"Best" is the rifle that fits the use you have in mind + price. If price is no object - then choose the name you like best, color, features, operation (DI or piston) - and call it best for you. I own several by different manufacturers and what you'll find is that although the basic design is the same, the execution is slightly different (fit, finish, stock, rails, etc.) - they all shoot the same cartridge reliably and accurately.
Not the case for me on promoting what I have chosen. Which I will agree most do that. I have an m&p15. All tho I do love it and you can't realy go wrong with a s&w no mater what it is. It just came along at the right time. And the way things are going in the world I was not going to wait on it any longer. I had to have one and I had to have it then. Like they say getting in the club is better than waiting on that one you may never have.

Normally it's better to wait and save a little more to get what you really want/need. While saving you should continue to use the time researching what's best for you. S&W isn't a bad choice though.

The "best" is the Ruger Mini-14.

But then, it is not an AR. Is is an M1/M14 scaled down to 5.56mm.

But it is "the best."
