I want it in an ar platform. I know about the 6.5 grendel and the 6.8 spc, but their ammo is expensive since i don't reload. I would like it for plinking but primarily hunting wild boar and possibly some deer.
Any rounds that are big enough for hunting, accurate, and cheap?

any round you chamber an ar15 for other than 556/223 is not going to be cheap. if you stray from the 556/223 you really should look into reloading to make them cost effective

other than that is maybe an ar10

Even .223 hunting ammo isn't gonna be cheap, you are still looking at .50 to 1 a shot. Most hunting ammo prolly around .75 each.

6.5 grendel is being offered by wolf for about I think you can find some brass cased wolf ammo for about $.50 a round.

I am also interested in hunting with the AR but the small bullets limit penetration so its really only going to be usefull for small to medium size game and good shot placement. Since the Deer and Pigs here in Cali are kinda small, (haven't seen anything over 150 lbs myself) I think 5.56 is adequate. But I'm seriously considering building a grendel to double as a long distance shooter. 1000 yards anyone?

If a .75 to $1 a shot for hunting is to costly maybe a new hobby is needed. Besides your gone a spend some good money on a rifle. Ammo becomes cheap for hunting.

Guys use .223's But you do need to pick better and heavier bullets from the cartidge that is also costlier. You had better place shots well. It ain't target shooting.

Sence you have to have an AR Buy your self a AR in 308 . Plink with surplus nato ammo and hunt with most any basic lower cost sp for hogs and deer.

Federal has several 223 hunting choices. 55 grain nosler or hollow point, at 3200 ft/s. For deer I would limit the distance to 100 yards, maybe 150. Shot placement is key. Kinda like bow season or using a handgun. Cost should not be much of an issue. Trajectory should be almost exactly the same as a 55 grain FMJ. Use a couple rounds to confirm your zero. You don't use your hunting ammo for plinking. And you don't hunt on full auto. One box should last for a couple seasons.

Or you can get a standard 5.56 ar and plink with it. Then get a 6.5 grendel or 6.8 spc or .300 blackout upper for your hunting needs. Takes like 10 seconds to change the upper.

What's your friend hunting.....Chevy big blocks? Ford F550? or just Mac and Freightliners?

I already have a 30-30 for the big hogs. Well the round is big enough but damn im not trying to make instant hamburger meat when i shoot the hog.

Well, eliminates the need for a grinder.... the .50 Beowulf can double as an instant sausage maker.
