Wanting to build my first ar15

So, I've decided i want to build my first ar15, and to be completely honest i am a total newbie when it comes to them. I know posts like these are extremely annoying but I am hoping to learn some valuable information.

So what do i need to get started? What would you recommend for places to buy from? Would it be cheaper for me to just find a complete rifle? I would rather build it but I have no clue what i should even do to get started. Hes a very good machinist and a die hard gun fanatic, so I was going to have him help me assemble it so that shouldn't be a worry.

I am most likely going to be purchasing parts as i can afford them over the next few months. I am looking to be in a $500-700 dollar range if that is realistic to be build a quality rifle.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and please go easy on me, i know i am a newb.

I suggest for your first AR that you build the lower and buy a complete upper.

Trust me/us, on this one.

And read, read, read.........

Thank you cane! I was glad to see you replied. I have noticed in my short time of being here that you are a very firearm knowledgeable person. I plan on doing lots and lots of reading, and after I do that, read some more.

Boyer - Really the lower is a piece of cake to assemble. Some knucklehead did a write up on it at the top of this section.

The lower is the lowest common denominator when it comes to an AR. Cast is the lowest quality, but even a decent name cast lower is going to handle Minute of Bad Guy for your first build.

$500 is probably out of the question in this market. $750 in this market is not, but you are going to have to do some shopping and you are going to have to specifically define what you are looking for this rifle to do for you.

I am available if you need some shopping help. :) PM me...

Dillinger, Thank you for your post. I can deal with the $750 price range. Money is just a matter of time. I am in no hurry to have the rifle, just sooner is always better but i can wait. I am basically going to use this for plinking and maybe some hog hunting and stuff when i go down to my uncles property in texas. I just want to learn about these guns and build one myself aswell.

Thank you once again. This is one more reason why this place is such a great firearm forum. Everyone can be so friendly and helpful. This is greatly appreciated. Off to do some research.

FTF is a strange community.

We fight amongst ourselves until someone asks for help. Then we have a unified front of Quality Individuals that are MORE than willing to extend outside their normal "quality of life" because a flag went up.

But I truly believe that we have the best community on the Internet. Period.

If you need help with your AR - PM me.

I agree. Build the lower, buy the upper.

You can get into a lower for a decent price. Palmetto State Armory has some good deals on lower build kits and lowers.

I'm just about finished with my first build - AR-15 Build. Its simple to get a lower on the books and add to it. I went from scratch with everything except the bolt carrier group. Its easy enough if you are good with mechanics. If you read enough "how to", you will figure everything out.

A couple good companies I used were OperationParts.com and BravoCompany.com. Both have fantastic products, stock and shipping. MidwayUSA.com is another solid company to buy from, but recently have limited stock with popular items.

This page has good detailed instructions with pictures to get started assembly of an AR-15. And of course, our members have a nearly unlimited amount of knowledge. Dillinger and Sniper03 were very helpful to me. You just need to remember your please-and-thank-you's. :D
