Default Unit Number?

My XM16E1 upper has three digits stamped into the rear of the carrying handle. Would this have been a unit number or something else?

It was a "rack number" used by armorers to track the rifle. They would issue the same rifle to the same soldier at the baracks using this number. It also allowed them to track matinance, and repairs on a particular gun.
