I agree a muzzle brake is a great place to start and from personal experience will make major improvements on muzzle rise. But I can also tell you that sometimes tweaks to the timing or buffer system are necessary especially with firearms like DPMS that tend to be way over gassed.

That's an excellent write up! Thanks AgentTikki. Do you recommend any particular muzzle break over another?

LOTS of muzzle brakes on the market. 90% of them will be an improvement over the flash hider.

I personally run a Battlecomp 2.0 because it was pretty popular when I got it and it's a darned good comp. If you are using it for 3 gun be sure of the rules because some compensators will put you in open division. The Jerry Miculek and Beenie Coolie brakes are held in pretty good regard amongst 3gun shooters. Also JP and Surefire make good comps.

Daniel Defense has what they call a muzzle climb mitigator. I've sold a few but never tested one. When it comes to compensators I find alot of people end up splitting hairs. If I had the time and money I would buy 100 compensator and do side by side comparisons with recoil tests and high speed camera tests.

Like I said I run the Battlecomp, I am sure there are a few better on the market now but if it aint broke don't fix it and I am more than satisfied with mine.

Update on my build:

Just added a Spikes Tactical BCG to the build. I also believe I've decided on a Daniel Defense m4v1 upper. Now I just need to find one
