Alright, so currently, I have a 556 rifle that i built blah blah blah. Next year, with taxes and savings, I want to put together a 308 ar, in the "dpms/sr25 magazine style build. My basic plans for it are to punch paper at extended distances (500 yards or so) and it would need to stand up to sand and the like.
I'm figuring on a 1-10 twist, 20 inch barrel. However, I'm open for suggestions, and request them. Is 20 inchs going to be adequete(sp) to push rounds out to around 800 yards( in case I need/want longer range) or is 24inches going to give me a signifigant improvement.
Is 308 in an ar really worth it, or should I look into alternative platforms? I really would like a semi auto 308, but should I go bolt gun instead?
What questions do I need to stay asking myself?

I'm no long range expert but I think a semi auto will work fine at 500 or even 800 if your goal is hitting paper. One thing I have learned is that barrel length is not the end all be all of accuracy. Another important factor is the thickness of the barrel compared to length. A short fat barrel will actually be more accurate than a long skinny one. Barrel length does increase velocity to a point which does affect accuracy.

In addition something to think about with a .308 AR-10 style platform is that parts are not interchangeable like they are with an AR-15. You should choose a brand and stick to it, you can't mix and match as easily as the AR-15.

Yeah, I think I'm going to stick with a "dpms-style" set up, just with as few dpms parts as possible:P.
I want to keep it lighter weight but have some reach out and touch someone capability. World war z and all that.

Do some research on 18" barrels. Last time I was checking on .308 I was hearing a lot of good things on 18" barrels.

That's actually one of the possibilities resting in the back of my mind. I'm considering doing an "spr" styled build. Using an 18 inch barrel, spr style compensator, and either the pri freefloat tube or the troy battle rail thingy, with a magpul PRS. It's going to be a very expensive build:/

I did a SPR-ish build in 5.56 a while back and liked it alot. I just don't do a lot of longer range shooting so it became a ".300blk I want to hunt some hogs" rifle.

SPRs make really good looking, capable firearms.

Damn. Now I'm thinking of doing a 300blk out build and a second ar in 556 as an spr. All i'd have to change out for the blackout is my barrel, which I could easily drop to any of my coworkers for a little less than what i paid for it.
