Time for Optics

I tried a search but it kept giving my errors.

I'm sure there's a million threads about which optics to purchase for an AR, so here's 1 more :D

For an A3 flat top with intentions to shoot accurately to 100yards what's a good scope? I like those red dot ones but don't know which ones are of good quality and which ones are just overpriced?

Dillinger 03-27-2009 07:36 PM

Argh. Here we go again. :D

You're right, we have been over this about a dozen times in the last 5 or 6 months.

What do you want to do? Clear rooms? Or shoot 100 yard groups?

Red dots and EoTechs and ACOGs are all good for close up, eyes open, close contact drills and fighting.

They are not so much for stringing together 100 yard groups to see what the rifle can do. Most of the reticles will cover your 10 ring at 100 yards to be honest.

A nice 3x9 power scope would be ideal for 100 yard work, and if you get some quick release ARMS, or similar, throw levers, you can pull it, snap on your Red Dot or Aimpoint, and go room to room. Or get a good set of folding BUIS ( Back Up Iron Sights ) and pull the scope, pop them in place and do your close range work.

I have an EoTech on my CQB model, and I love it, but it's for street to street style engagements. I know I can hit minute of bad guy all day at 200 yards and that is all I care about for that weapon.

If I were building a Tactical Support Weapon, I would want good glass on there though so I could make more pinpoint shots.....

So the question is really application....

Best of luck!

Unfortunately I want both! hah

I want the ability to clear a room and then go to the range and shoot tight groups :D

Dude - Nice stick. You are halfway there already.

Pick one of these for a folding rear sight to match the front site. Either the 9680 or the 9680A-1 ( personal choice ).

That takes care of your SHTF sights.

Next, you need to decide if you want glass, or you want an electronic, illuminated CQB scope.

Or do you want both?

lol "SHTF" sights

I'm pretty set on something electronic...i've seen those EoTechs, they're naaassty...and pricey!

Dillinger 03-27-2009 08:54 PM

You laugh now, but when your $500 EoTech takes a bullet with your name on it, or your batteries crap out, you will be happy you can snap it off with a couple of throw levers and pop up your BUIS with the push of two buttons.... LOL

Well, then you need to decide what electronic scope you want, then get a set of quick release, return to zero mounts for it....

In terms of electronic scopes or sights such as the EoTech, are there other (less pricey) options?

Dillinger 03-27-2009 09:08 PM

Tons.

Aimpoint
Red dot
ACOG
Leupold's CQ/T - I think

And a few others that I have in my favorites at home, but can't remember. I will try to post a few for you this weekend, but yes, there are a lot of heads up options that aren't $500....
