I believe you could do much worse then buying an upper from Stag. Stag Arms is part of CMT, Connecticut Machine and Tool and has supplied lowers and uppers to many of company's over the years. Prices and warranty are out standing too.

In your price range I would get a Spikes Tactical (carbine or middy) for $800.
Take your time do your research. Take peoples advise for what it is. I bought my first AR to have a pro built AR with a Lifetime Warranty by Daniel Defense. My next 2 i built with comlete uppers that are guaranteed. The lowers are super easy to assemble but you dont have to go that route if your not comfortable with it.
Guys like Quentin are only trying to help you get the most for your money. I would not burn bridges that have a wealth of knowledge on the other side.

Gonna shoot it for the first time today!!

I Purchased one from Double Star at a local gun show. Big mistake was NOT taking the lower with me to test fit. The Upper I purchased was EXTREMELY lose. 1/4 gap between receivers. I was VERY concerned. Contacted the guys at Double Star, sent it back. The tried it on one of the lowers they had there and they were shocked too. Test fitted several for me and sent me a WINNER.

Tight fit, This M4 Upper with a 16" barrel. I put the 4 rail on it, but the refunded my shipping and got it to me within 3 days return UPS.

As far as their customer service is concerned I am ecstatic!!!!!

Can't wait to shoot it.
