Recently I have realized that it has been quite some time since I have feed my firearm addiction. I was looking into adding to my small pistol collection when a friend of mine, and fellow gun enthusiast, asked why I wasn't considering a rifle since the only long gun I have currently is a shot gun. I realized he was right. I looked at a variety of rifles but then decided that I probably should get an AR before the end of next year. I have a small savings pool set up that I put money aside each month, currently I have around $ 400 bones. My current ceiling is around 1,000. I think around this price point I can get a solid basic AR for plinking and general home defense purposes. Currently I am looking at a left handed Stag arms AR. Could anyone suggest some equivalent makes and manufacturers?


Also, is there any sort of chart that organizes the manufacturers into tiers?

Are you trolling or for real? Have you looked at RRA's leftie?

Since you bring up the chart, it's a favorite topic of mine. Stag at the time did not do so well fielding a near milspec M4gery. Today they claim to have something better but charge an extra hundred for a milspec upgrade.

I'm a HUGE Stag fan!! Up until a short while ago Stag was the only manufacturer of lefty guns. You will not be disappointed with one.

RRA makes a good lefty gun as well.

You would be happy with Stag or Rock River Arms left-handed AR. Both are solid.

Why would you assume I was trolling? Frankly I am utterly confounded by that statement, of course I am for real, why else would I have asked the question?

The little tidbit about the milspec fielding is interesting and I will take a look at the left handed rock river arms.

Sorry. The way this was worded made me suspicious. The M4 Compatibility Chart is a polarizing topic. A little googling should be enlightening. No one likes to see their AR or even TV near the bottom of any listing.

Quentin, I probably should have also mentioned that I am an absolute neophyte when it comes to AR systems (it probably also wouldn't have hurt to mention that I am more of a lurker than a poster). Up to now all my time in the wonderful world of guns has been spent with pistols and shotguns. The array of choices with AR, not to mention the ability to build it from scratch, is dizzying.

The array of accessories is also incredible, I've literally spent hours looking at pistol grips and sites for the platform, and have come to the conclusion that I will wait on those items until I get proficient with a plain vanilla AR.

K2k, If you google AR tier you'll find very heated arguments everywhere including this forum.

Anyway, no matter now. I'd just hammer out exactly what you want in an AR and what you'll use it for as you save up the cash.

I would give lots of thought whether a lefty is the best idea. Definitely shoot a standard AR and if at all possible, a lefty. Many left handlers end up liking the standard AR better. And that opens up the field of fine ARs considerably.

I'll take that into consideration. I shoot my right handed shotgun just fine but I assumed that I would want a lefty AR, its a good point and I do feel like I am somewhat limiting myself.
