one more question is there a place were i can find which calibers are compatible with the standard 5.56/223 lower? i know of 9mm .22 .17hmr, can you do a 6.8mm? and for a 7.62/.308 you have to have a different lower correct? acr's are pretty sweet but 3k is way outta my price range.

Here are the some of the more common and more interesting uppers that are (or have been) produced for the standard AR-15 lower:

* 223/5.56 and based upon that case
* 6 x 45
* 7 x 40
* 357 Mag Rimless
* 300 Whisper / .300Fireball / 300-.221
* 6.5 x 40
* .30 Coyote (30 x 45)
* .17 Remington
* .17 Mach IV
* .20 Tactical
* .19 Calhoun
* 5.7 FN
* .204 Ruger
* 6.8 SPC
* 30 HRT
* 338 Spectre
* 10 mm Mag
* 35/40
* 219 WASP-C
* 7.62 x 40
* 5.45x39
* 7.62 x 39

* .338 x 39
* 6 PPC
* 6.5 Grendel / 6.5 AR / 6.5 PPC Improved
* 22 PPC
* 7 sCAR ....
* 30 Carbine
* 5.45x39 / .21 Ghengis
* 7 BR
* 6.5 BR
* 300 Sabre
* 8mm (belt fed upper)
* .308 (again a belt fed upper - no longer available)
* 458 SOCOM
* 450 Bushmaster
* 44 Mag
* 440 CorBon
* 44 AMP
* .475 Tremor
* 50AE
* 499LW
* 50 Beowulf
* .50 BMG (single shot)
* .50 Blackpowder (1 made)
* 9mm
* 45ACP
* 32ACP
* 22 LR
* 17 HV
* 10mm
* 7.62x25
* 224 BoZ
* 7.62x24
* 9x23
* .357 Sig
* .357 Auto
* 40S&W
* 223 WSSM
* 243 WSSM

I make no claims to the validity of this list, as I was not the original source. However, it does look pretty close to what I have seen done, or advertised.
Calibers in BOLD are most common, as far as finding uppers and parts.

And yes, 7.62x51 (.308 Nato) will take a completely different lower - and uppers, too.
I KNOW WHERE YOU GOT THAT!!! Anyway, I am getting a GRENDEL for deer season, love everything about it. And the Beo and Socom are awesome too. I personally dont need or even want an upper in any pistol round.

for some reason i just dont see a .50 cal round fitting into a 5.56 lower. looks like im gonna have to go down to the armory and visit our gunners mates. man that would be a fun one to have! but on a piratical note i think a .22 and a Grendel upper are in order since i will be savin about 600 on the whole gun over the sig lol

Slo thanks for the heads up.

I have looked at the 6.8 as well (acr is sick). As of right now I dont reload but plan on it when I am in my own house and not renting. if one of the two (6.5/6.8) get picked up for military use then I would get that since this will be my all around/shtf/rec rifle. I also plan on gettin a Socom 2 after my next deployment. Just to cover all the nato rounds and most common ones that is.

After reading about the 9mm upper and learning that you have to change the hammer for it do you also have to change the hammer for the others? mainly the .22 and the 6.5 6.8?

That thing is wicked cool! I have absolutely no use for such a beast, but that doesn't stop me from wanting one.
