Marty ter Weeme designed the 458 Socom. You can find bullets from 100 grs up to 600 grs but it works best with the 300 to 400 grain bullets. Barnes has made 300 TTSX for the 458 and you can push it to about 1800 fps. It is my personal favorite and I have killed over 100 hogs with this bullet. The 405 gr jsp can be pushed to 1650 fps and it is my second choice. For cheep reloads look at the 300 gr rem. bulk bullets. The best powders are 110/296, 4198,RE7 and Little Gun.There are also a lot of cast bullets you can use. I have the RRA gun and it works great. You will find more info on the 458Socom forum.

The RRA 458 SOCOM is a great gun/caliber. Like Boarbuster said,the 300-405 grain bullets seem to work best.
This caliber in mainly a reloaders caliber,there are only 2 mfg's of Factory ammo-SBR & Corbon. Besides being very expensive,a lot of guy's have problems with their factory ammo. I strictly handload,so I can't personally commit on any of the factory ammo problems.

Wilson Combat is now making guns and loading ammo.
Txhillbilly is right it is best if you reload. With only 3 suppliers ammo is expensive. You can expect to pay at least $50.00 per box of 20 rds.

458SOCOM load selection:

Look at the mag use:

Brass is abundant:

And the fact it looks bad-azz is just gravy!!!!!

My AR-45 MAGNUM P.I.G

Scope check with the 300gr Barnes TTSX-BT.

100 yds, winds R2L gusts up to 20 mph.

Best accuracy from all I've tried to date.

Here's some info on the 458SOCOM;

if you reload for this round be sure your crimping is done as a seperate step. some bullet profiles are just wierd enough with the design of the case of the case to cause the neck to collapse into the body of the case if done as a one step process. ive had this occur using hornady 350grain softpoints.

im using a RRA 458 socom mid length upper and its pretty accurate groups hovering around 1 inch to 1.5 inches more than adequate for hunting.

the only issue ive had with this round is it is magazine sensitive and only really likes USGI magazines. 20 rounders seem to work best with fewest issues. pmags not so much. whatever magazine you use it helps that the springs are new. you do not want to use worn or older magazines that may be working just fine for 5.56 since the springs will lack enough strength to pop those heavy bullets up the mag well efficiently

How does the 458 compare to the 308 at 100+ yards in stopping power and accuracy?
