today was day one with the new rifle. im really stoked about some of the results from the shoot and some things im going to change.
first off here it is on the bench
i loaded up 12 rounds (was supposed to be 13 rounds) using 748 powder and some of the SS109 air pulls i bought from UP Ammo. i wasnt expecting much and used 9 of them just for break in and getting zero at 100 yards (foolish mistake). as it turned out that load of 25.5 grains of 748 under the SS109's turned in the best group of the day!!
finally moved out to 300yards for the last 4 break in shots using the recommended krieger procedure of 5 cycles of 1 shot clean then 3 shots clean then 5 shots clean.
about 75 degrees, wind negligible going straight downrange
this was the results of the last four shots. the flier was from a 69grain sierra match king over varget... it widened the group up by an extra inch
.55 inches 3 shots 300 yards SS109!!
including the smk flier 1.4 inches 300 yards
next up 77grain sierra matchking over varget. i used various charge weights from 23 grains to 23.9 none of which turned in fantastic results. it started getting ok at 23.9 so here are those results
2.2 inches 5 shots 300 yards
maybe its the powder maybe its the bullet. the 77grain smk doesnt have a good rep but its what i have other than a couple of leftover 69 grain smk and the SS109. i prolly should have loaded more 109's and used the 748 under the 77smk's. its something ill correct for the next trip.
the accuracy potential is definately there with the .5 inch 109 group.
im not too happy with the timney trigger and im going to look for a better trigger pack. it made shooting a little harder than it should have been. it was also ejecting to the 4 oclock position so it also needs a better quality buffer and spring than the dpms one :/ the cases arent hitting the deflector but its not perfect and it should be.
overall im ecstatic with the preliminary results!!
