anyone that has qualified m16 using an m40a1 gas mask quickly realizes you do not need sights to get hits on goblin sized targets at up to 100m

I don't run any magnified optics on my carbines, so I just lower 1/3 co witness. I guess If your using magnified optics than maybe.

What about precision or battle rifles? Would it be better to just offset a 1x dot?

Default Offset sights or traditional BUIS?

I personally feel that transitioning would cost you time . I guess it depends on the purpose of the rifle. If your plinking , do what you like. But for duty , I wouldn't want to lose any time transitioning . Regardless of what the primary or secondary sighting system is. Personally I run red dots as primary and flip ups for back up in a lower 1/3 co witness. I do have one rifle that's built to go long range, with a Leopold AR Mark I . I don't even bother with back ups. Plus the ergonomics of the weapon are compromised with extra crap( as some one has already stated) . I've built 33 AR's now and the more experienced I get the simpler I'm making them now. My first build looked like a mall ninja special, now they are practical and dependable instead.
