Default New Build

Well, I've had the shoulder surgery and the first torture session. I'm ready for my first AR build. I've decided on a mid-length D.I. 16" barrel without the M203 notch. I guess my first step is finding a barrel in 5.56, chrome-lined, and cheap enough. I still haven't decided on traditional M4 sights or flattop. All the other parts are readily available, from everywhere. Any suggestions on barrels?

The major trend in barrels these days is melonite so they are easier to find and cheaper.

But if you want chrome lined (I still do most of the time) check out Green Mountain Barrel. They are good quality and reasonably priced.

I've gotten some pretty good insight from an article at everydaymarksman.wordpress.com, about first AR builds. As far as 16" chrome lined barrels, most everything I've found are sold out. I'll keep looking, though, it looks like its gonna take a lot longer than I anticipated.

Take a look at Faxon Barrels I have used a half dozen of differing profiles and find them real quality. Most are 1/8 twist.

If the OP still wants chrome here is a great deal on an M4 profile CL barrel from Anderson. $137.00
and an unlined for $85.00

They also have a mid length.

The quality would probably be a little better with Green Mountain or some of the melonite suggestions above, but for the prices you won't be out much if there is a problem.

Thank you. They have a 16" contour chrome-lined that looks promising, for $144.

Ended up buying the Anderson chrome-lined "16. Also bought an Anderson stripped lower. They said it uses a 3/4" grip screw, don't know what that's about. Also looking at an LWC unmarked upper, hope they match up ok. I do have a question about sources for standard AR-15 front sights/gas blocks. I've found a couple of adjustable models for $150, more than I'd want to spend. The barrel is .75 thick at the gas port.

The 3/4" grip screw is the screw's needed length due to Anderson not tapping all way through hand grip screw hold on lower.

The fix, when using stock hand grips was to use a nut/washers that would fit inside the hollow part of hand grip, or cut off some of screw length, or re-tap thread holes all way through.

I've used the cheap method for couple years of a nut that fits over the screw's threads, but allows to be seated inside the hollow of hand grip. Out of sight and still keeps everything as factory.

Will a screw cutter work? Standard thread?
