New 458 Socom build... - AR-15 Discussion

Milling out the lower today. Its broken back down and in my 80% Arms jig right now.

Spoiler pic of my mockup. Barrel and bolt look good. After looking at that barrel nut if looks like the piston is still a no-go. One of the wrench flats falls in the wrong place and it's too deep for the support shoulder.

I'm not going to shoot a bunch about milling the lower. I'll concentrate on shooting the upgrades I do when building one up.

Stock I'm using isn't length adjustable and needs to be set far enough back to clear the charging handle. That foregrip set isn't going to make the final cut either. It's rail mounted so it sets 1/4" higher than a direct mlock mount set. Not as slim as I wanted. Just using them for hand positioning, but I do like the combo of angle and thumb stop at 90 degrees.

That's it for today, got to run to town for a new drill bit. A buddy borrowed my drill set and chewed the 3/8" pretty bad. Enough, that it's easier to buy instead of sharpening it down that far...

I went with a milspec style lower, looked at the billet 80% blank and passed on it for this rifle. Milspec just looks better here. Matches the upper better also.

Everything but the final bottom pass in the trigger pocket and trigger slot, done on the lower. I was trying to mill it with a generic import end mill rather than the 80% Arms branded end mill. Less money but my cheap import square bottom mill now looks like a ball nose. Not too bad cutting out the drilled holes but it overloaded at the bottom of the pocket. The corner flutes were just too delicate for this type of use. The 80% Arms mill I used before did 4 lowers, this one couldn't finish one. I'll buy quality next time.

I'm waiting to finish until I get a new mill cutter. I don't want to ruin the work I did get done. Pin holes, safety, rear pocket, done, trigger pocket is ~90% depth. Took about an hour from the time I started cutting metal. Maybe 10-15 more minutes to get a true, smooth trigger pocket and I can start the custom work. Pics and details on that part of the process to come. The build goes on...

Some more gun porn showing off its parts. That upper is the big bore upper ejection port I ordered. Nice work, I only need to blend the feed ramp. Also got to dimple the barrel for the gas block, can't forget that.

Nice and light for a carry hunter, 5.75 lbs as shown. That stock is very solid, not easily adjustable, but can be configured lots of ways with a hex wrench. Nice handguard too. Handgrip is aluminum with rubber insert side panels, light, slim and solid feeling grip. Pic three shows the side panels. It feels well balanced in that configuration.

I need to find a muzzle break I like too. The big bore brake I've got is the wrong thread...
