Default Need recommendation on semi automatic rifle.

Hello, I'm going to be completely honest. I don't know an AR from an AK. I live in suburban Delaware. If riots were to break out and all hell hits the fan like a lot of us believe it will, I am looking for some superior protection. At present I have a 40 Cal Beretta semi pistol and a Mossberg 9+ one tactical shotgun. I am looking to add a semi automatic rifle to my collection. Based on my situation, what would be your recommendation. I am aware that the 223 and 5.56 our standard with the AR. Should I move up in caliber? Or is this overkill for my situation. I would like to have 6 to 10 mags each holding 28 to 30 minimum. And remember, I would like a small scope possibly 1 x 30 if you think that is adequate. I look forward to your response. Geo.

both are great guns. if you dont know the difference yiuo should probly look up some pictures. google is your friend. as far as choice i would go with the AR. ammo would be easier to find in a SHTF scenerio. and they are also generally more accurate. i just really like em.. but i also like the ak. its fun to play with. i still say an AR first. then an AK.
I have been a silent witness
to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hour comes
when I am torn into strips and used as bandages
for my wounded comrades on the battlefield,
When I fly at half-mast to honor my soldiers,
Or when I lie in the trembling arms
of a grieving mother
at the graveside of her fallen son.

I like both. The AR is a lot more refined, and has endless options for customizing. The Ak is just a hoot to shoot. Perhaps not quite as accurate, depending on the model you get. They are a lot less refined. However there are some very nice higher end AK's that look nice. I watched a video on youtube about the AK, and maintenance of it. The guy said look to make sure the barrel isn't bent too much. Dump out the bigger rocks, and shoot away. While there is some truth to that, I would clean mine a little bit better. LOL
Doin' what I can, with what I got.

If I were you I would go with an ak. I would prefer an ar but an ak is generally gonna be cheaper to buy and to shoot. It would be way easier on the wallet to practice with an ak on a let's say weekly basis until you're comfortable with it. If money isn't a concern then by all means, go for an ar. But if it is an ak might be the better option. You'll have a blast with either

.223 and 7.62x39mm cost the same. For cheap steel Tula it's about $5 a box from an honest place.

I suggest an AR, more accurate, easier to disassemble, and in all honesty just as reliable. If money is an issue get the Smith and Wesson M&P Sport. If not get whatever you desire.
