Default Need 5.56 Ammo recommendation

What ammo would you recommend for this?

Rifle: RRA LAR-15 Elite Operator2 w/ 16" barrel 1:9 twist (scoped)
Shot range: =< 100 yards

Purpose (1): SHTF multi purpose (defense & hunting) w/ priority on defense (have other rifle calibers for hunting)
Cost: No object (but still good value)
Need brand/bullet weight and source if possible.

Purpose (2): practice shooting.
Cost: Best value.
Need brand/bullet weight and source if possible.

Thank you.

Assuming you prefer brass over steel I would recommend lake city 5.56 Nato, American Eagle (black box) 5.56 or Remington .223. Cabelas, Midway, Sportsmans Guide, Slick Guns etc usually have 100-500 round bulk cases for between 32 - 50 cents per round for 55gr. 62gr green tips are slightly higher, either will work for your planned use.

The Tula, Bear and other ruskie steel cased ammo is a little cheaper, trade-off is a dirtier round and a bit more clean up to keep things working flawlessly. Also, some ranges do not allow the use of the steel casings, no salvage value for them since you can't reload it and they have to sort it out of their brass scrap buckets.

I don't know a lot about ammo but I use federal fmj 55 grain for target shooting. It's cheap and it doesn't seem to get the rife too dirty. I've only had maybe 5-10 ftfs in 1000 rounds shot. I've heard that federal is an under powered brand so I guess that's why. I get mine from Cabelas in Boise Idaho for $29.99 for 100 rounds.
