Flash hiders are usually long thin radial, longitudinal slots on the muzzle device. They shape the flash signature into thin planes, as opposed to the normal ball of fire you see from regular target crown. Think of it like this....flash hiders shape the flash signature into sheets of paper, then turn the paper on edge, so that you only see the edge of it thus reducing the area that you see.
