Default Last Piece I Need Is The Lower.....

OK, I have all I need to complete my build except the stripped lower. I live in CA so I need something that is legal here. I have spent a long time building this up so I don't want to go cheap on the lower, but at the same time I don't want to spend an extra hundred bucks on a brand name.

Any advice?

Hiya fellow Commiefornian!

I'd suggest looking into calguns.net for The source of any Commiefornian related questions.

The only lowers that you need to be worried about are the ones listed on the federal ban. They are listed by name. Almost all the new ones sold today at local gun shops aren't sold in Californian with noteable exceptions of some colt models sold to LEO/Military.

Highly recommended reading

One other thing you wanna watch out for are ambidextrous lowers that you cannot put a bullet button on (if you don't go featureless).

Hope this helps ya!

I'd recommend forged over billet as billet is more expensive. I like to try and buy locally (to me) Riflegear makes a great lower with flared magwell and a upper tensioner screw (in case your upper is a little loose). But they are located in LA country, prolly 4 hours away...

I'm not familiar with the Santa Cruz area, what models do your local stores carry?

Tikki, what are some good things to know about lesser name brand lowers that help differentiate good from bad / cheaply made? Or just have to scout reviews?

With the exception of full auto aplications, the lower just has to be dimensional in spec.

For lesser known brands I'd just be worried about having returning it if it wasn't in spec. Honestly you should go with a lower that has the rollmark and color you like the best. There are a few choices as like intergrated trigger guards, flared magwells, tensione bolts, and ambidexterous conrols to choose from but honestly any standard lower will d an adequate job, even for precision oriented builds.

Its prolly the most superficial part of you build. Check out the sticky on this forum by Quentin, shows a lot of different rollmarks.

One of my faves is the unobtanium Mapul lower. Love that FU china doll lol.

Forgive me for my ignorance, but what does OLL mean?

OLL stands for Off List Lower.

If it's off the list, you are golden. Its must be named exactly, to be banned, but since the ban was soo long ago, most aren't even being made anymore (with the exception of some colt models). The newer Colt models being sold in Cali nowadays are basically the same as the old ones (with the exception of bullet buttons), but the name on them has been change so that they are no longer on The List.
