larger AR caliber
well, just trying to do some research for tax time.
i really want to get into some larger cailbers with this platform. im not sure what caliber i should go with. i want to use an AR for deer hunting. but what do i pick? 6.5 grendal, 6.8spc. 300 blk, 458 socom. and then theres the ar10 in 308. hmm well i know at some point i will have an ar 10. but for now what caliber should i try to focus on more. ive read some stats and the 6.5 is looking pretty awesome. i reload so i dont think ammo would be as hard to come by once i got my componets. |
Any of them are good. I like my new socom and black out. A few more you might look into jj is the Beowulf's calibers

How bout teling us what your interested in doing with it?
Long distance 1000 yard shoots? Cleaning rooms is a sd/hd situation? Getting cloverleafs at 200 yards? Taking a grizzly at 500 yards? Sbr for your supressor? Etc etc |

458 Socom
My Socom is my favorite hog gun. I like the Barnes 300 TTSX. It is more expesive to shoot but that bullet performs perfectly every time. I will pobably use it when I go elk hunting on shots out to 200 yards. My next personal fav is the 405 gr jsp. This bullet is cheep when you buy it in bulk. It will open up on anything, sometimes shedding its jacket, but it keeps on going. Most will expand larger than a quarter. The 6.8 is a great deer round. I like the 85 gr BArnes tsx, 95 gr TTSX and the Hornady 120 grSST. All are good on deer out to 300 yards. With the 95 gr TTSX you can stretch that out to 400 yards. I have killed hogs up to 300 lbs with the 85 gr Barnes. I would recomend you get an upper or a barrel bolt combo from ARP. My 16" ARP barrel will shoot the 120 SST into less than sub moa groups all day long. |
6.5 Grendel is more of an intermediate to long distance round. Its capable for short range, but it really shines with 18"+ barrels and can stay supersonic beyond 1000 yards with the right ammo and barrel. I don't think its what you are looking for.
You should consider the 6.8 spc2, 300 blackout, .458 socom, and 500 beowulf, but the later 3 might no be optimum for 300 yard shots. The 6.8 better suited for that range. |
