A couple years ago I participated in Secret Santa here. I bought my recipient a SOG machete. It came with a free little folding knife. I carry it on my key chain and I use it quite often. Pretty much any time I need to open something or take the tag off of something I just bought.

Take a look at Dan's knives, if you are looking for a carbon steel working knife, look no further!

If pretty, factory production, cookie-cutter, shiny knives are your style, don't bother.

Dan is one of those "once in a life-time", stumble upon artisans you will NEVER forget phone number! This is a vendor. Buy with confidence. I'll back this guy, he delivers!

Geez Cane ... You've got some pretty amazing knives - each one!
But that "civilian" the claw, that thing would just plain scare an adversary to death! I own a couple Syperco's but missed that one somehow...

First, see if there are any gun specific tool kits available. For instance, there are several 1911 and AR15 multi tools on the market, like a leatherman, but with tools like punches and wrenches specifically designed for these guns.

Beyond that, a good set of HOLLOW GROUND screwdrivers (don't cheap out on these, and a good idea to order from brownell's or midway, that way you KNOW they're meant to be used for guns.) A set of small brass punches (or nylon if you can find them. I never have, but I've heard of them) a small hammer, and I keep a block of wood covered in mole skin, which is like a protective bandage, kinda feels like felt. The wood block is just a work surface for drifting pins and such with a punch and hammer.

That would be a pretty decent starter kit.

I always have a Spyderco Military or a Zero Tolerance 0360 in my pocket. IMHO, the best general purpose folding knives ever made.

I keep a Bark River "Gameskeeper" in my pack.

Neither of these knives is cheap. But then, nothing worth having ever is.

Leatherman! Seriously, how useful is a giant single blade knife as a tool? I'd rather have something with pliers, files and picks if it's going in my range bag. I never got the whole tactical cool guy knife thing.

I carry a small locking pocket knife, A large hunting knife and a small tool kit to work on my guns if needed.

I picked up an armorers essential tool kit at a gun show last month. I think it was like $145. It is in a nice case, and has the basic essential tools needed for minor repairs in the field. Fits well in a side pouch of my field bag. Might never need it in the field, but nice to have just in case.

Like those Moore Makers! They are good knives. If you want an american made knife by old Timer, go on e-bay. They have loads of the old models.
