Default I like how it says Ar 15 but means Armalite.

Misinformation on the title to the whole thread.

Most yahoos think it means "Assault Rifle"...

Hey, look at that, my very first post in the AR thread!

I don't know jack about AR's, but I do know what AR stands for...

Yeah, a ton of people think that's what it stands for. An AR can't be an 'assault rifle', an assault rifle by definition must be full auto. That's why yhe ATF came up with the 'semi auto assault rifle' terminology.

AR15 doesnt stand for armalite or armalite rifle or assault rifle. It is simply the initials for "Automatic Rifle model 15".

As the first AR15 were select fire rifles.

All of the searches I conducted on this subject indicate that AR does indeed stand for

ARmalite, Eugene Stoner's employer and manufacturer at the time of his design of the weapon.

I am not sure if you are joking... but no, AR stands for ArmaLite...

maybe the AR24 was going to be a automatic rifle and they changed it to a pistol...

look it up.

another fact that will dismiss the AR= automatic rifle is;
Quote:
The ArmaLite AR-50 is a single shot bolt action rifle manufactured by ArmaLite
The AR1 is a bolt action rifle as well.

You beat me to it, you are exactly right, even the handguns have always had an AR designation.

http://www.armalite.com/images/Library%5CHistory.pdf A good read and has pics of most of the AR line of firearms. The ones that are not shown are the ones ArmaLite didnt produce and died on the drawing board.
