Home Defense Rounds
What is a good Home Defense 223 Round? One that will most likely not go thru walls. I would like to know what to buy and keep loaded if SHTF.

Sorry but youll be hardpressed to find high power rifle ammo that wont go through drywall like tissue paper. But hollow points make a good man-stopper. Just stay on target, eh? We stock on cheap fmj and have a few mags of hollow points. Just my two cents :)

Light, frangible and high velocity would be better than heavy, hard core (SS109-M855).

I'm thinking Hornady's 45 grain 'B' HP, assuming they will reliably feed in your weapon.

As I very. very seldom buy 'Bought-en' ammunition, what is out there commercially is beyond me.

Rhino24, if you live in an urban area a .223 loaded with anything but frangible ammo is going to have a chance of hitting a bystander. In rural areas defense has many more roles than just defending the castle. A .223 loaded with soft point ammo gets the job done.

Hornady 55 grain TAP will do it.

I hear varmint rounds are less likely to go thru walls.

I concur with Locutus. I would suggest Hornady 55gr. Tap.
This round would serve the purpose for what you want.
The issue of penetration regarding walls. There is no weapon that would be fired in a home that will not penetrate walls unless maybe a BB Gun! So the most important thing is to select the best round and this one fits the bill for the AR or 223 rifle. A lot of people do not realize that a 9mm bullet from a pistol can penetrate 3 to 4 complete walls. So the Tap will be less. Main thing is to know #1. The field of fire compared to where the perpetrator is positioned and #2. Relationship with loved ones located in other areas of the house. And also to be "Absolutely Positive of the target!!!! (Especialy at night and coming out of a sleep!)

I would go with a varmit type bullet that breaks up on contact.

I would go with a frangible jacket round it has some sort of material the breaks up like 20 million microns it finer than flour and it breaks up fast it doesn't penetrate very far but it's good for soft target and breaks up and makes a big temporary wound cavity they cost $10 for 20 rds

If you have any fear of wall penetration and/or endangering others nearby, use a shotgun. Plenty of 12 gauge loadings available and same goes for handgun loadings although on a much lessor scale of available ammo selection. I can stop a BG with a 12 gauge small game shot size in a magnum/hi brass loading at the HD/PD usual combat distances! Like 20 feet as a oft quoted HD/PD distance!
